A Narrative Inquiry About the Experiences of Self-harmed Youth Through Art Therapy Based on ETC

Abstract
This study is a Narrative Inquiry on the Art Therapy Experience of Self-harming Adolescents based on the Expressive Therapies Continuum (ETC). The client, who is a middle school student, committed self-harm due to his father's sudden death and maladjustment to school. The researcher considered that the treatment of each component of ETC could have an integrated approach to self-harmed adolescents, and took an integrated approach and wanted to contain the treatment process sincerely. From February 2020 to June 2020, a total of 20 sessions were held once a week. According to the results of this study, first, the client, who was defending at the cognitive level, attempted to contact and explore the self-harm experience through the kinesthetic, sensory, perceptual, and emotional components of ETC. Second, through the cognitive, symbolic components, and creative level of ETC, a new experience and understanding of self-harm has been gained. In particular, at the creative level, a hopeful future was expressed through the symbol of a flying butterfly. Above all, art therapy based on ETC showed that the client¡¯s self-harm decreased. In addition, being aware of the attitude that the client tried to escape from the responsibility and the given role, and the courage to challenge again, became a meaning and opportunity for rebirth for both the client and the therapist.
